The Chicago Fire were charter members of the World Football League (WFL) in 1974, competing at Soldier Field in a city where the NFL's Bears had deep roots. The Fire were one of the league's more competitive franchises that first season, giving Chicago football fans a genuine alternative. The team rebranded as the Chicago Winds for 1975, but the Winds barely got off the ground before the league collapsed in October. Together, the Fire and Winds gave Chicago two seasons of spring football that few people remember — and a uniform set that stands up on its own.
