Description

Team: Chicago Fire, Chicago Winds
Years Active: 1974 (Fire) -1975 (Winds)
Home: Soldier Field (Chicago, IL)

The Chicago Fire played the first season of the World Football League in 1974. The team started off 7-2, but went on a 10 game losing streak after some key injuries. The owner, local real estate magnate Tom Origer, was so angered by the collapse, he shut down the team and forfeited the final game of the season. Struggling financially, the league went all in on a new franchise with the Chicago Winds the following season. The hopes for the entire league depended on the Winds signing Joe Namath. The team even made the uniforms resemble the Jets to please Namath. When negotiations fell through (he wanted 50 percent of the league's TV revenue), there was no interest in the team or league. Without Namath, the league lost its television deal. The Winds folded after only five games, and the league folded a few weeks later.

Team Info

Years Active: Fire 1974, Winds 1975
Stadium: Soldier Field

The Chicago Fire played the first season of the World Football League in 1974. The team started off 7-2 and looked to be one of the best teams in the league. After some key injuries, the team went on a 10 game losing streak. The owner was so angered by the collapse, he forfeited the final game and shut down the team after the season. The following season the Fire were replaced by the Chicago Winds. The hopes for both the team and the league were largely dependent on signing Joe Namath.  The team even changed it's uniforms to look like the Jets and assured fans that Namath coming to the team was a done deal. When Namath decided to stay with the Jets, there was virtually no interest in the Winds and the league lost its television deal. The Winds folded after only 5 games and the league folded a few weeks later.
