The Birmingham Stallions are one of a handful of franchises whose name has been carried in both the original United States Football League (USFL) (1983–1985) and the revived USFL (2022–2023). Across two eras of spring football, the Stallions name has stood for consistency, dominance, and the deepest fan loyalty in the league.
The original Birmingham Stallions, coached by Rollie Dotsch, played all three seasons of the USFL's run and reached the playoffs every year. Quarterback Cliff Stoudt directed an explosive offense behind 1,000-yard rushers Joe Cribbs and 1983 Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier (who joined Birmingham in 1985 after the Pittsburgh Maulers folded), with receivers Jim Smith and Joey Jones stretching defenses downfield. The Stallions went 9–9 in 1983, 14–4 in 1984, and 13–5 in 1985 before falling to the Baltimore Stars in the semifinals. Birmingham consistently led the USFL in attendance at Legion Field and built one of the most loyal fanbases in spring football history.
The revived Birmingham Stallions did the original one better. Coached by Skip Holtz and quarterbacked by 2023 USFL MVP Alex McGough, with running back Bo Scarbrough leading the rushing attack, Birmingham went a combined 19–4 across two regular seasons and won back-to-back USFL championships — defeating the Philadelphia Stars 33–30 in 2022 and the Pittsburgh Maulers 28–12 in 2023. They were the first dynasty of the modern spring football era. From Legion Field to Protective Stadium, the Stallions name remains synonymous with Birmingham football.
