This incarnation of the Atlanta Chiefs took the field in 1979, reviving a famous local soccer name after the Colorado-based Caribous franchise was purchased and relocated to Georgia. The club was owned by broadcasting magnate Ted Turner and played its outdoor matches at Atlanta–Fulton County Stadium.
The Chiefs endured a dismal 1980 campaign with the league's worst record, but rebounded in 1981 to claim a division championship and draw bigger crowds. Even so, the franchise never turned a profit, and Turner shut the team down after the 1981 North American Soccer League season.
