The River Rats gave Albany twenty seasons of minor league hockey downtown, and a name that stuck. The rat came from the Hudson — a nod to the river running past the arena — and merchandise sold well beyond the Capital Region.

The 1994–95 team was the peak. Albany went 46–17–17, the best record in the league, and swept through the playoffs to take the championship in the club's fifth season. Martin Brodeur had come through the year before; Petr Sykora, Patrik Elias, Brian Rolston and Scott Niedermayer all played in Albany on their way up.

The Rats stayed a fixture at the arena through three name changes to the building itself before the franchise relocated after the 2009–10 season. Two decades, one title, and a name Albany still wears.
