The Albany Choppers took the ice for the 1990–91 season after owner David Welker relocated his franchise to the Knickerbocker Arena, marking the league's first expansion east of its traditional Great Lakes footprint. A regional supermarket chain came in as a major investor, lending the club its name and its red, white and blue colours.

Without an affiliate partner to draw on, and facing a hastily formed rival club just across the Hudson River, the Choppers struggled to draw fans as the team sank toward the bottom of the standings.

Despite winning six of their final nine games and making a late push for a playoff spot, the franchise folded on February 14, 1991, after just 55 games — one of the shortest runs any club has managed at this level.
