The WFL launched in 1974 as a 12-team spring-and-summer professional league that aimed to challenge the NFL with international expansion (originally announcing Toronto and Mexico City franchises) and stars-poached-from-Miami headlines. The league signed Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield, and Jim Kiick away from the Dolphins to play in Toronto — though the Canadian government blocked the franchise and the trio ultimately played in Memphis.

The WFL's inaugural season produced World Bowl I in December 1974, won by the Birmingham Americans over the Florida Blazers 22–21. The 1975 season was a financial disaster: multiple teams folded mid-year, attendance figures had been inflated in 1974, and the league suspended operations in October 1975 — twelve weeks into the schedule and before any World Bowl II could be played. The WFL remains one of the most ambitious and most mismanaged challenger leagues in modern pro football history.
