The Virginia Destroyers played the final two seasons of the original UFL, from 2011 to 2012, as the relocated continuation of the 2009–2010 Florida Tuskers. Playing at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex, the Destroyers won the 2011 league championship, beating the Las Vegas Locomotives 17–3 — the only UFL title in that era not won by Las Vegas.

Coached by Marty Schottenheimer in 2011 and Doug Williams in 2012, the Destroyers were one of just four franchises still operating when the league suspended operations amid financial collapse in mid-2012, and the team folded with it.
