About the Vancouver Millionaires

The Millionaires were charter members of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association in 1911–12, founded by Frank and Lester Patrick — the visionary brothers who introduced jersey numbers, the blue line, the forward pass, and most of the framework that modern hockey still uses. The Patricks built Vancouver's Denman Arena as the first artificial-ice rink in Canada, and stocked the Millionaires with the best players money could buy (hence the name).

The 1915 Millionaires, captained by Hall of Famer Cyclone Taylor and featuring Mickey MacKay, Si Griffis, and Hugh Lehman, swept the Ottawa Senators in three games to win the Stanley Cup — the first Cup ever awarded to a non-Eastern team. They reached the Stanley Cup Finals four more times in the next decade behind some of the greatest scorers in early hockey history. When the PCHA merged with the Western Canada Hockey League in 1924 and the WHL collapsed in 1926, the Millionaires sold their players to NHL teams; many of them landed with the new New York Rangers under Lester Patrick, where the franchise's tactical innovations spread across the NHL. The Millionaires Stanley Cup banner still hangs as Vancouver's only championship.
