The Sacramento Mountain Lions played three seasons of the UFL 2009 from 2010 to 2012 at Hornet Stadium as the relocated continuation of the 2009 California Redwoods (San Francisco). Coached by Dennis Green — the former NFL Vikings head coach who served as both head coach and GM in 2010–11 — the Mountain Lions gave Sacramento yet another pro football franchise following the WLAF Surge (1991–92) and CFL Gold Miners (1993–94).

The Mountain Lions never made a league championship game and were one of just four franchises still operating when the UFL 2009 suspended operations in mid-2012 due to financial collapse. The franchise folded with the league, ending Sacramento's pro football presence.
