The Las Vegas Locomotives played all four seasons of the UFL 2009 from 2009 to 2012 at Sam Boyd Stadium, becoming the dominant franchise of the league's brief run. Coached by Jim Fassel — the former NFL Giants head coach who led New York to Super Bowl XXXV — the Locomotives captured back-to-back league championships in 2009 (defeating the Florida Tuskers 20–17) and 2010 (defeating Florida 23–20).

Las Vegas reached a third straight title game in 2011 but fell 17–3 to the Virginia Destroyers — the only championship in UFL 2009 history not won by the Locomotives. The franchise was one of just four still operating in 2012 when the league suspended operations after Week 6 due to financial collapse, never crowning a 2012 champion. The Locomotives gave Las Vegas its second pro football franchise of the modern era following the CFL Posse (1994), and predated the city's eventual 2020 arrival of the NFL Raiders.
