About the Spirits of St. Louis

The Spirits of St. Louis are basketball's all-time greatest cult franchise. Born when the ABA's Carolina Cougars relocated for the 1974–75 season, the Spirits played just two ABA seasons at the St. Louis Arena before the league merged with the NBA in 1976 — and yet, in those two years, they produced some of the most colorful stories, characters and moments in pro basketball history.

Center Marvin "Bad News" Barnes was the franchise's defining player — a 6-foot-9 talent who once refused to board a flight because, due to a time-zone change, the plane would land before it took off (his complaint: "I ain't getting in no time machine"). Forwards Maurice Lucas, M.L. Carr and a young Moses Malone (who joined the Spirits late in their existence) gave the team major NBA-caliber talent. Owner-brothers Ozzie and Daniel Silna ran the franchise. And a 24-year-old broadcaster named Bob Costas began his career calling Spirits games — the same Bob Costas who would later become one of the most famous sportscasters in American history.

The Spirits' on-court legacy is fascinating, but their off-court legacy may be even more famous. When the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976 and the Spirits weren't selected for the merger, the Silnas negotiated a settlement that gave them a perpetual share of NBA TV revenue paid by the four ABA teams that did join the league. That deal — sometimes called "the greatest sports contract in history" — paid the Silna brothers and their heirs hundreds of millions of dollars over the next four decades and was finally restructured in 2014.
