About the San Francisco Spiders

The Spiders joined the International Hockey League as an expansion franchise for the 1995–96 season, owned by Spectacor and playing at the historic Cow Palace in Daly City. The team's branding, designed by Frederick & Froberg with a striking purple, teal, and orange palette and a web-and-spider crest, was years ahead of its time — collectors today consider it one of the great minor-league logos of the decade.

On the ice, head coach Jean Perron led a roster mixing veterans like Mike Bullard, Tom Tilley, Yvon Corriveau, and goalie Robb Stauber with younger prospects, and the Spiders surprised the IHL by going 40–31–11 and qualifying for the playoffs in their first and only season. They lost in the first round to the Las Vegas Thunder. Despite respectable attendance, ownership pulled the plug after just that single year as the IHL's expansion economics began collapsing. The Spiders never came back, but their merchandise has only grown more iconic — a one-season cult favorite that earned a permanent place in 1990s hockey memory.
