About the San Francisco Seals

The San Francisco Seals were a minor-league baseball institution, playing in the Pacific Coast League from 1903 through 1957. Long before the Giants moved west from New York in 1958, the Seals were the Bay Area's home team — and arguably the most important franchise in the storied PCL, a circuit that operated as a near-major-league level of professional baseball in the years before air travel and West Coast expansion.

The Seals' most famous alum was a teenage Joe DiMaggio, who debuted for his hometown Seals in 1932 and put together a 61-game hitting streak in 1933 before signing with the New York Yankees. Two of his brothers, Vince and Dom DiMaggio, also passed through Seals Stadium on their way to the majors. Hall-of-Fame manager Lefty O'Doul ran the team for 17 seasons (1935–1951) and turned it into a model franchise, while stars like Frank Crosetti, Tony Lazzeri, Paul Waner and Ferris Fain all wore Seals flannels at various points in their careers.

The Seals won 12 PCL pennants between 1909 and 1957, played in their final pennant-winning season the year before the Giants arrived, and gave way to MLB's westward expansion. Their legacy lives on at every Bay Area ballpark and in the hearts of fans who remember when the Seals — not the Giants — were San Francisco's team.
