What Were the San Antonio Wings?

The San Antonio Wings were a professional football team that played a single season in the World Football League, in 1975 — the league's second and final year. Often described as a continuation of the bankrupt Florida Blazers franchise, the Wings set up at Alamo Stadium and gave San Antonio its first taste of big-time pro football. Quarterback Johnnie Walton led the entire WFL in passing that season, and the team was coached by Perry Moss.

The 1975 Season — Perfect at Home

The Wings were a study in contrasts: utterly dominant at Alamo Stadium and winless on the road. San Antonio went 7–0 at home but 0–6 away for a 7–6 overall record, making their home field one of the toughest tickets in the league. They made their home debut on July 26, 1975, beating the Charlotte Hornets 27–10 before a crowd of 12,325. The fun ended abruptly: the entire World Football League folded on October 22, 1975, before the season could finish.

The Venue — Alamo Stadium

The Wings played at Alamo Stadium, the historic 25,000-seat venue in San Antonio. The team's perfect home record made the old stadium a genuine fortress during the WFL's brief run.
