About the Portland Mavericks
The Mavericks were a single-A Northwest League franchise founded in 1973 by Hollywood actor Bing Russell (Bonanza, The Magnificent Seven, and Kurt Russell's father) after the Beavers, Portland's longtime PCL team, abandoned the city. Russell's Mavericks operated without a major-league affiliation — the only fully independent club in organized baseball — and built rosters from open tryouts that drew hundreds of cast-off pros, college kids, and characters who otherwise had nowhere to play.
The result was the wildest run in minor-league history. The Mavericks won four Northwest League pennants in five seasons, regularly out-drew the rest of the league put together, signed the only female front-office executive in pro baseball at the time, and gave Kurt Russell, Frank Peters, and pitcher Joe Garza minor-league careers. Reggie Thomas, who hit .333 against major-league competition in spring training, was a Maverick. The team was eventually pushed out of the league in 1977 when MLB used territorial rights to plant an affiliated A's farm team in Portland — a move so beloved-team-killing that the Russell family later sued for, and won, a settlement worth nearly $200,000 (huge money in 1978). The Battered Bastards of Baseball documentary tells the full story; we just keep the jerseys in stock.
