About the Pittsburgh Pipers

The Pittsburgh Pipers are one of the most important franchises in ABA history. As one of the league's eleven charter franchises in 1967, the Pipers won the inaugural 1968 ABA Championship in their first season behind Hall of Famer Connie Hawkins, who was named both ABA MVP and Finals MVP after being blacklisted from the NBA. The 1967–1968 Pipers remain one of the most celebrated single-season teams in pro basketball's defunct-league history. After the championship season, the franchise relocated to Minnesota for the 1968–1969 season as the Minnesota Pipers, then returned to Pittsburgh as the Pipers for the 1969–1970 season. New ownership rebranded the team as the Pittsburgh Condors for the 1970–1971 season, ending the Pipers identity. The Pipers' championship pedigree and Hawkins' legacy make this one of the most coveted ABA throwback identities. Royal Retros honors the Pipers' founding-era ABA chapter.

For the franchise's other identities, see the Minnesota Pipers (1968–1969 era) and Pittsburgh Condors (the franchise's 1970–1972 rebrand). For more ABA franchise pages, see the ABA hub. For more Pittsburgh sports, see Pittsburgh regional collection.
