The Pipers began play in Pittsburgh in 1967 as charter members of the American Basketball Association. Behind Connie Hawkins, they won the first championship in ABA history. Despite the title and solid attendance, the team moved to Minneapolis the next year as the Minnesota Pipers.

Poor attendance in Minnesota brought the Pipers back to Pittsburgh in 1969, but fans who felt abandoned by the move stayed away. The franchise was renamed the Condors in 1970. Notable Pipers included Hall of Fame coaches Vern Mikkelsen and Buddy Jeannette, and players Connie Hawkins, John Brisker, George Thompson, and Mike Lewis.
