About the Pittsburgh Maulers

The Pittsburgh Maulers were a one-and-done original USFL franchise — they played a single 1984 season at Three Rivers Stadium before owner Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. (yes, the patriarch of the 49ers ownership family) folded the team. Despite their short existence, the Maulers made enormous early splashes: they signed 1983 Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier out of Nebraska to one of the largest contracts in spring-football history, and they hired veteran NFL coach Joe Pendry's staff to run the team.

The 1984 Maulers struggled on the field, going 3-15 despite having Rozier in the backfield and quarterback Glenn Carano taking snaps behind a leaky offensive line. Pittsburgh fans, used to Steelers Super Bowl winning football, didn't fill Three Rivers, and DeBartolo decided not to play in the league's hoped-for fall 1986 schedule. The Maulers folded after 1984, and Rozier moved on to a long NFL career with the Houston Oilers.

The Maulers name was revived for the 2022 USFL relaunch, giving Pittsburgh fans another chance to root for spring football.
