The original New Jersey Generals were the highest-profile franchise of the USFL's first run. Owned briefly by J. Walter Duncan before Donald Trump bought in during 1983, the club signed Heisman winner Herschel Walker, who put up three of the best statistical seasons in pro football history, plus quarterback Brian Sipe and 1985 Heisman winner Doug Flutie. Coached by Walt Michaels, New Jersey went 6–12, 14–4 and 11–7, reaching the divisional round in 1984 and 1985.

The revived Generals returned in 2022 under head coach Mike Riley, finishing 9–1 — the league's best regular-season record — before losing the conference championship to the Philadelphia Stars. The franchise went 4–6 in 2023, its final season before the USFL and XFL merged to form the UFL without a New Jersey team.
