The Royal Giants were created by the owner of the local Brooklyn Royal Cafe and mostly played against white semi-pro teams in their early days. As the NLB became more organized, the team played in various leagues at the professional level.
In the late 1920s the Royal Giants played multiple exhibition games against teams led by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Notable players included Smokey Joe Williams, "Cannonball" Dick Redding, Frank Wickware, Charles "Chino" Smith, and John Henry "Pop" Lloyd.
