The original Newark Bears played in the high minor leagues at Ruppert Stadium, becoming the New York Yankees' top farm club after owner Jacob Ruppert bought the team in 1932. The 1937 Bears are widely considered one of the greatest minor-league teams ever assembled. The franchise moved to Springfield, Massachusetts after 1949, ending a 32-year Newark run.

The name returned in 1998 as an independent Atlantic League club at a new downtown ballpark, later playing in the Can-Am Association before folding after the 2013 season. The revived Bears drew former major leaguers including Jose Canseco, Rickey Henderson, Carl Everett, and Armando Benítez.
