About the New York/New Jersey Hitmen

The Hitmen were the New York metro entry in the original XFL, the WWE-NBC venture that launched in February 2001 with the most aggressive marketing campaign in spring-football history. Coached by Rusty Tillman, a former NFL special-teams legend, the Hitmen played at Giants Stadium and built their identity around physical defense and a black-and-purple uniform that looked more pro wrestling than pro football — which was, of course, the point.

Quarterback Charles Puleri ran the offense behind a roster of former NFL fringe players and Arena League veterans. The Hitmen finished 4–6 in the league's only season, missing the playoffs by a single game in the East Division. Star running back Joe Aska led the team in rushing, defensive end Jamel Williams was one of the league's hardest hitters, and the team gave New York-area football fans something to do between Giants and Jets seasons. When the original XFL folded after one year, the Hitmen disappeared with it — but the merchandise has only grown more iconic among XFL diehards.
