About the New York Guardians

The Guardians were the New York metro entry in the 2020 XFL relaunch, the Vince McMahon-Oliver Luck attempt to revive the league with a more football-serious presentation than the wrestling-flavored 2001 original. Coached by Kevin Gilbride (the longtime NFL offensive coordinator) and quarterbacked by Matt McGloin, the Guardians played their home games at MetLife Stadium — the same venue used by the Giants and Jets.

New York went 3–2 through the abbreviated 2020 season, second in the East Division, before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the XFL to suspend operations on March 12, 2020. The league filed for bankruptcy a month later. Dany Garcia and Dwayne Johnson eventually bought the assets and rebooted the XFL in 2023 — but the Guardians did not return; the new XFL ran with different city placements. The 2020 Guardians thus became one of the most poignant "what could have been" franchises of the modern alternative-football era — cut short by a once-in-a-century event right as they were finding their footing.
