About the Minnesota Muskies
The Muskies were one of the ABA's eleven charter franchises in 1967, owned by Larry Shields and coached by Jim Pollard — the former Minneapolis Lakers Hall of Famer. Playing their home games at the Minneapolis Auditorium, the Muskies were one of the better first-year ABA teams, going 50–28 behind Mel Daniels (the eventual ABA Rookie of the Year), Donnie Freeman, Connie Hawkins (briefly, before he was traded to Pittsburgh), and Sam Smith.
Daniels averaged 22 points and 16 rebounds and led Minnesota to the Eastern Division semifinals, where the Muskies lost to the Pittsburgh Pipers in five games — the Pipers went on to win the inaugural ABA championship. Despite the strong on-court product, attendance was disappointing in a city still mourning the 1960 departure of the Lakers, and ownership relocated the franchise to Miami for 1968–69 as the Miami Floridians. Daniels was traded to the Indiana Pacers, where he became a three-time ABA MVP. The Muskies' lone Minneapolis season is one of the great single-year ABA peaks — and a rare cult throwback in our catalog.
