About the Miami Floridians
The franchise began life in 1967 as the Minnesota Muskies, one of the ABA's eleven charter members. After a single season the club moved to Florida, becoming the Miami Floridians for 1968–1970 and then rebranding as simply The Floridians for two more seasons before folding in 1972. They played most of their games at the Miami Beach Convention Center and at Dinner Key Auditorium, with select dates in Tampa, Jacksonville, and West Palm Beach — a true statewide franchise long before that was a thing.
Larry Brown coached the team during the magenta-and-orange era. Mack Calvin made All-Star teams running the offense, Don Freeman lit it up from the wing, and Les Hunter held down the post. The Floridians became famous for their courtside "Floridians ball girls" — a marketing stunt that drew national attention — but on the floor they were a fast-paced, entertaining team that posted a 91-win three-year stretch and reached the ABA playoffs three times. When the league trimmed franchises ahead of the 1972–73 season, Florida lost its team — and South Florida wouldn't get pro basketball back until the Miami Heat in 1988.
