About the Memphis Showboats

The Memphis Showboats joined the United States Football League in 1984 as one of the league's most colorful expansion franchises. Owned by William Dunavant Jr. and playing home games at the Liberty Bowl, the Showboats wore a striking red, white, blue and gold color scheme with a paddlewheel-riverboat logo that perfectly captured the spirit of Memphis. Coach Pepper Rodgers led a high-energy squad that played an entertaining brand of football and quickly turned the Liberty Bowl into one of the loudest spring-football venues in America.

The Showboats are best remembered for unleashing a young defensive end named Reggie White on the football world. Drafted out of Tennessee, White spent two seasons in Memphis (1984–1985) racking up 23.5 sacks in 1985 alone before moving on to the Philadelphia Eagles and a Hall-of-Fame NFL career. He wasn't alone — the Showboats also rostered future NFL contributors and produced consistently competitive football across both seasons.

When the USFL folded after the 1985 season, Memphis was widely considered one of the franchises most likely to survive a hoped-for NFL merger. That merger never came, and the Showboats faded into memory until their name was revived for the 2022 USFL relaunch and carried into the United Football League in 2024 — giving a new generation of Memphis fans the chance to once again root for the riverboat.
