About the Louisville IceHawks

The IceHawks joined the East Coast Hockey League as an expansion franchise in 1990, the first pro hockey team in Louisville since the WHA-era Kentucky Colonels played a brief stint in the 1970s. Playing at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center, the team filled an underserved Louisville sports market wedged between college basketball royalty (the Cardinals) and the Kentucky Derby's spring focus.

Across four ECHL seasons the IceHawks made multiple playoff appearances, developing players who would later make NHL rosters and giving Bluegrass State hockey fans a four-season run of regional development hockey. The franchise relocated to Florida in 1994 (becoming the Jacksonville Lizard Kings), and Louisville pro hockey changed hands several times in the years that followed. The IceHawks remain a beloved chapter of the city's sports history, and Royal Retros throwbacks keep the team alive in stitched twill.
