About the Los Angeles Xtreme

The Xtreme were the LA Coliseum entry in the original XFL in 2001, coached by Al Luginbill (former WLAF and AFL2 head coach) and built around Tommy Maddox — a former first-round NFL pick whose career had collapsed by the late 1990s. The XFL gave Maddox a second life. He led the league in passing, was named MVP, and posted a then-startling number of wins for a roster otherwise built from spare parts.

The Xtreme finished 7–3 in the regular season, second in the West Division, then won two playoff games — first beating the Chicago Enforcers in the West semifinal, then crushing the San Francisco Demons 38–6 in the inaugural (and only) Million Dollar Game on April 21, 2001 at the LA Coliseum. Maddox earned $1 million in playoff bonuses on top of his salary; the win earned him a spot back in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he became the league's Comeback Player of the Year in 2002. The XFL folded six weeks after the Xtreme's title, making LA the original XFL's only champion in perpetuity.
