About the Los Angeles Wildcats
The Wildcats were the LA entry in the 2020 XFL relaunch, the Vince McMahon-Oliver Luck attempt at a more football-serious revival of the league. Coached by Winston Moss (a former NFL linebackers coach) and quarterbacked by Josh Johnson, the Wildcats played their home games at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson — the same venue used by the LA Galaxy.
LA went 2–3 through the abbreviated 2020 season, third in the West Division, before COVID-19 forced the XFL to suspend operations on March 12, 2020. The league filed for bankruptcy a month later. Receivers Tre McBride, Jordan Smallwood, and Nelson Spruce caught most of the targets; the Wildcats led the league in defensive turnovers when the season was cut short. Dany Garcia and Dwayne Johnson eventually bought the assets and rebooted the XFL in 2023, but the Wildcats did not return — the new XFL replaced them with the LA Battlehawks placement (eventually moved to St. Louis). The 2020 Wildcats remain a poignant footnote in the modern alternative-football story.
