About the Los Angeles Stars

The Stars came into existence when the Anaheim Amigos relocated to Los Angeles for the 1968–69 ABA season and rebranded under owner Jim Kirst. Coached by Bill Sharman — the future Hall of Fame coach who would go on to win an NBA title with the Lakers in 1972 — the Stars built around Zelmo Beaty, Mack Calvin, and Merv Jackson. Playing at the LA Sports Arena, they finished 33–45 their first year and 43–41 their second.

The 1969–70 Stars made a deep playoff run, defeating the Dallas Chaparrals and the Denver Rockets before losing to the Indiana Pacers in the ABA Finals — a six-game series that put the Stars on the brink of a championship. Despite the on-court success, the Lakers were drawing all the LA basketball oxygen, and Kirst sold the franchise to a Salt Lake City group that summer. The Stars relocated to Utah for 1970–71 and won the ABA Championship in their first Utah season. The franchise's brief LA chapter is a critical bridge — the Anaheim/LA/Utah Stars produced one ABA title and one of the great cult uniform sets of the era.
