About the Las Vegas Outlaws

The Outlaws were one of eight teams in the original XFL, the WWE-NBC joint venture that launched in February 2001 with the loudest marketing campaign in the history of spring football. Las Vegas was supposed to be the league's marquee market — silver-and-black uniforms, a Sam Boyd Silver Bowl crowd of nearly 30,000 for the home opener, and a roster full of recognizable college names. Coached by former Boise State head man Jim Criner, the Outlaws went 4–6 in the league's only season, finishing third in the West and missing the playoffs by one game.

The team's enduring legacy is one player: running back Rod Smart, who chose "HE HATE ME" as the name on the back of his jersey rather than his own. Smart later played for the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII, but it was the Outlaws gig — broadcast in primetime on NBC — that cemented the most famous nameplate in pro football history. When the original XFL folded after one season, the Outlaws went with it, but the merchandise has never stopped moving.
