About the Kentucky Thoroughblades

The Kentucky Thoroughblades were one of the late-1990s AHL's most distinctive Sun Belt experiments — an AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks that brought minor-pro hockey to Lexington, Kentucky from 1996 to 2001. Playing at Rupp Arena (the famed home of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program), the Thoroughblades developed San Jose Sharks prospects including Patrick Marleau, Marco Sturm, and others who would become NHL regulars. The team's distinctive horse-themed branding paid tribute to Kentucky's storied thoroughbred horse-racing culture, making the Thoroughblades one of the most visually iconic AHL franchises of the era. After five seasons in Lexington, the franchise relocated to Cleveland for the 2001–2002 season, becoming the Cleveland Barons. The Thoroughblades remain a beloved deep cut among AHL collectors and Lexington hockey fans. Royal Retros honors the Thoroughblades' brief but memorable run.
