The Minnesota North Stars were one of the six expansion franchises added to the top tier of North American professional hockey in 1967, the league's "Original Six" doubling of size. Over 26 seasons in Bloomington's Met Center, the North Stars built one of the most distinctive identities in the sport — green-and-gold sweaters, the North Star logo, and a passionate "State of Hockey" fanbase that produced championship rosters at both the youth and pro levels.

Minnesota reached the Stanley Cup Finals twice. The 1981 team rode back-to-back postseason runs against the Calgary Flames in the semifinals before losing in five games to the dynastic New York Islanders. The 1991 squad authored one of the great Cinderella runs in playoff history — knocking off the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues (the regular season's top two teams) before falling to a young Pittsburgh Penguins team led by Mario Lemieux. Following financial difficulties that culminated in the 1978 merger absorbing the Cleveland Barons franchise, the North Stars relocated to Dallas in 1993 to become the Dallas Stars, ending a 26-season run in Minnesota.
