The Louisville Icehawks brought professional minor-league hockey to Kentucky for four seasons from 1990 to 1994, playing at Broadbent Arena and giving Louisville its first taste of professional hockey. The Icehawks were one of the early-era Sun Belt expansion franchises that helped grow the Southern professional hockey ecosystem in the early 1990s.

The franchise played four seasons in Louisville before relocating to Jacksonville for the 1994–95 season. The Icehawks' distinctive icebird-themed identity and pioneering role as Louisville's first professional hockey team in the modern Minor League Hockey era have made the jersey one of the more collected pieces of early-1990s Southern hockey apparel — paving the way for the later Kentucky Thoroughblades and other Kentucky professional hockey ventures.
