What Was the Federal League?

The Federal League was a major professional baseball league that operated for two seasons (1914–1915) as a direct competitor to the American League and National League. Considered the last legitimate third major league in U.S. professional baseball, the Federal League signed away dozens of established AL/NL stars, played in major-league-quality ballparks (Wrigley Field was originally built for the Chicago Whales), and forced significant antitrust litigation. The league folded after 1915, but its legal challenges led to the Supreme Court's 1922 Federal Baseball Club v. National League decision establishing baseball's antitrust exemption.
