The Carolina Cougars were established as the Houston Mavericks, a charter member of the ABA. They moved to North Carolina in 1969. Tom Meschery coached the team in 1971 and after retiring as a player, Larry Brown took over the following season. The Cougars were touted as a regional team, playing home games in three cities: Greensboro, Charlotte, and Raleigh, North Carolina. Game 7 of the 1973 Eastern Division Finals was played in Charlotte instead of Greensboro where the team won Games 2 and 5. Following the loss, many questioned that decision and the team never made another deep playoff run. They became the Spirits of St. Louis in 1974. Notable players included, Billy Cunningham, Larry Brown, Joe Caldwell, and Mack Calvin.
