About the Birmingham Bolts

The Bolts were one of eight teams in the original XFL, the WWE-NBC venture that launched in February 2001 with massive television hype and a single doomed season ahead. Coached by Gerry DiNardo, the former Vanderbilt and LSU head coach, and quarterbacked by Casey Weldon and Pat Barnes, the Bolts played their home games at the historic Legion Field on Birmingham's west side — the same stadium that had hosted the WLAF Birmingham Fire, the World League's most successful franchise.

Birmingham finished 2–8 in the league's only season, last in the East Division, and never quite captured the magic the city had shown for the USFL Stallions or the WLAF Fire. Receivers Bobby Collins and Eric Brown were among the league leaders, but the Bolts could never put together consistent quarters of play. When the XFL folded that summer, Birmingham lost yet another spring-football franchise — a recurring story for the Magic City. The Bolts uniforms have aged into one of the great collector items of the 2001 XFL era.
