The Iguanas were the first expansion team the revived Central Hockey League ever granted, arriving at Freeman Coliseum in 1994. Bill Goldsworthy took the first bench but stepped down ten games in for health reasons; John Torchetti finished the job, carrying San Antonio to the league finals in each of the franchise's first two seasons.

A rival club moved into Freeman Coliseum before the 1996–97 season, and with the building hosting 74 hockey games that winter, Iguanas attendance fell by half. The team lost a court fight over the lease and shut down after the season. New ownership revived the franchise in 1998 and kept it going four more years before it closed for good in 2002.
