The Mad Cows were a one-night alter ego for the Columbus Chill, the minor league hockey club that sold out 83 straight games at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum in the 1990s. In the fall of 1997, with Columbus freshly awarded a major-league franchise, the team teased a name change at a Thursday press conference and said nothing more, leaving the city assuming the Chill were handing over their identity.

Instead, the front office unveiled the Mad Cows, a gag borrowed from a local alt-weekly's dig at Columbus's cow-town reputation. The next night, Halloween, the Chill skated out in black-and-white Holstein sweaters for a "Meadow of Doom" party complete with a forty-foot inflatable cow and a cow-tongue dunking contest, then beat the Johnstown Chiefs 2–0 in front of another sellout. The sweaters were never worn again.
