About the Anaheim Amigos

The Amigos were one of the ABA's eleven charter franchises in 1967–68, owned by Art Kim and James Ackerman. Coached by Al Brightman (a former All-American at Seattle), the Amigos played their home games at the brand-new Anaheim Convention Center and finished 25–53 in their lone Orange County season — a low point in a league full of low points that first year, but they fielded recognizable names like player-coach Larry Brown (briefly), Les Selvage, and Steve Chubin.

Selvage made ABA history that season by attempting an unheard-of 461 three-pointers, leading the league by a comical margin and previewing the volume-shooting era that arrived four decades later in the modern NBA. The Amigos couldn't fill the Anaheim arena and ownership relocated the franchise to Los Angeles for 1968–69 as the Los Angeles Stars (who later moved to Utah and won the 1971 ABA title). The Amigos lasted just one season in Orange County, but they remain a rare and valuable cult chapter of California pro basketball history — and a one-of-a-kind throwback in the ABA universe.
