The Pittsburgh Maulers played a single season in the original United States Football League (USFL) in 1984 before being revived for the modern USFL's 2022–2023 seasons. Despite only one year of original existence, the Maulers' name is permanently linked to one of college football's biggest stars.

The original 1984 Pittsburgh Maulers, coached by Joe Pendry and owned by industrialist Edward DeBartolo Sr., made the boldest splash of the USFL's 1984 expansion class by signing 1983 Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier out of Nebraska. Backed by quarterback Glenn Carano and a roster the team paid heavily to assemble, Pittsburgh nonetheless struggled to a 3–15 record at Three Rivers Stadium. The Maulers folded after their lone season, with Rozier joining the Jacksonville Bulls and later the Houston Oilers. The franchise's brief existence remains a defining example of the original USFL's spending excesses.

The revived Pittsburgh Maulers returned in 2022 under head coach Kirby Wilson and went 1–9 before head coach Ray Horton took over for 2023, leading a turnaround to an 8–2 regular season and a USFL Championship Game appearance — where Pittsburgh fell to the Birmingham Stallions 28–12. The Maulers franchise was discontinued after the 2023 USFL season and did not carry over into the UFL.
