The New Jersey Americans played the inaugural ABA season at the Teaneck, NJ, Armory — a facility owned by the National Guard. The team finished tied for the final playoff spot and were set to host a play-in game, but a circus had already booked the arena and the team couldn't find a suitable venue in time. The Americans had to forfeit the play-in game and did not participate in the playoffs.

The following season they moved to Long Island and became the Nets, eventually winning two ABA championships before joining the senior league in 1976. Notable Americans included Levern Tart and Tony Jackson.
