The Memphis Tams played two seasons in the ABA as the rebranded continuation of the Memphis Pros under new owner Charles O. Finley (the eccentric baseball owner of the Oakland A's). The team name TAMs stood for Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi — the three states the franchise marketed to.
It soon became clear Finley had little interest in the team. Mike Storen resigned as ABA commissioner to take over the franchise and recruited new co-owners — including Memphis legend Isaac Hayes. The team was rebranded once again, this time as the Memphis Sounds for 1974–75.
