The Pittsburgh Maulers played a single season in the original USFL in 1984, coached by Joe Pendry and owned by industrialist Edward DeBartolo Sr., before being revived for the modern USFL's 2022–2023 seasons. The original club made the boldest splash of the USFL's 1984 expansion class by signing Heisman winner Mike Rozier, but struggled to a 3–15 record and folded after its lone season.

The revived Maulers went 1–9 in 2022 under Kirby Wilson before Ray Horton took over in 2023 and led an 8–2 turnaround to a USFL Championship Game appearance, falling to the Birmingham Stallions 28–12. The franchise was discontinued after the 2023 season and did not carry over into the UFL.
