The Philadelphia Blazers were one of twelve founding WHA franchises, playing a single, chaotic 1972–73 season. The club made one of the league's most aggressive splashes by signing Boston star Derek Sanderson to a record-shattering contract, though his tenure was short and unproductive; the Blazers also signed goaltender Bernie Parent and center Andre Lacroix, who put up a 124-point season.

On-ice and financial struggles in a market dominated by the established top-tier team forced ownership to relocate the franchise to Vancouver after a single season, where it continued as the Vancouver Blazers.
