About the Philadelphia Blazers

The Blazers were one of the WHA's twelve charter franchises in 1972, owned by hockey-promoter Bernie Brown and coached by player-coach John McKenzie. Their splashy debut signing was Derek Sanderson, the Boston Bruins All-Star who became the highest-paid athlete in any sport when he signed a 10-year, $2.6 million deal with the Blazers. Sanderson promptly suffered a back injury, played just eight games for Philadelphia, and bought out the rest of his contract for a reported $1 million.

The Blazers' home opener on October 13, 1972 became a legendary disaster: the brand-new Zamboni cracked the Civic Center ice, the game had to be canceled, and rink workers handed out Blazers pucks to placate the angry crowd — fans threw the pucks back onto the ice, briefly creating a riot. Despite the chaos the team finished 38–40, second in the East Division, behind Andre Lacroix's 124-point season, but lost in the first round of the playoffs. The financial pressure of Sanderson's deal and the failed Civic Center crushed the franchise, and after that single season the team relocated to Vancouver as the Blazers (eventually becoming the Calgary Cowboys). The Blazers thus exist forever as one of the most colorful single-season franchises in WHA history.
