The Cougars were the relocated Houston Mavericks, a charter ABA franchise that moved to North Carolina in 1969 and split home games between Greensboro, Charlotte, and Raleigh. Tom Meschery coached the team in 1971, and Larry Brown took over the next season, winning ABA Coach of the Year with a 57–27 club in 1972–73.

The regional setup caught up with the team in the 1973 Eastern Division finals, when Game 7 was moved to Charlotte instead of Greensboro — where the Cougars had won Games 2 and 5 — and they lost; the franchise never made another deep playoff run and became the Spirits of St. Louis in 1974. Notable players included Billy Cunningham, Larry Brown, Joe Caldwell, and Mack Calvin.
