Originally the Denver Larks, the franchise was sold to trucking executive Bill Ringsby just before its first ABA game in 1967 and renamed for his company's best-selling truck model. Guard Lonnie Wright joined in 1968 after four seasons with the football Broncos and stayed four more. After Ringsby sold the team in 1972, it played its final season as the Rockets in 1973–74, then took the Nuggets name for the ABA's last two seasons — clearing "Rockets" for Houston's franchise as merger talk intensified.

Stars David Thompson, Dan Issel, and Bobby Jones anchored the late-ABA Nuggets under coach Larry Brown, guiding Denver to the 1976 ABA Finals, where it lost to the New York Nets. The franchise was one of four ABA clubs to continue into the NBA after that year's merger.
