The Chicago Mustangs were a charter member of the 1967 United Soccer Association, owned by Arthur Allyn Jr. and playing home matches at Comiskey Park. In their debut season the Mustangs fielded an entirely imported roster — an Italian first-division club playing under the Chicago identity, standard practice in that league.

When the league merged with a rival to form the North American Soccer League in 1968, the Mustangs continued as an actual Chicago-based club. Polish forward John Kowalik won MVP with 30 goals and 9 assists, marks that stood as league records for a decade, before the franchise folded at season's end.
